Resume Tips
-
Choose the best format: There
are two major types of resumes: reverse chronological and
functional. Pick the format that will present your skills,
employment history, and education in the best manner possible. Or,
you may choose to have a version of each one.
-
Sometimes less is more: Be sure
to list only the most important job duties for each position. If you
find that you have 20-30 sentences or statements, pick the top 10-15
and list only those. You can always elaborate about a work
experience during an interview.
-
Summarize information: Aim for a
one-page resume. Only add a second page if it is absolutely
necessary. You may also have a second version of your resume that
can be three or more pages. Have this second, more thorough resume
available during an interview, or at job fairs, etc.
-
Proofread: Check spelling and
grammar using your word processing software's built-in tools. Be
sure to read through your entire resume more than once. It's also a
good idea to let someone else take a look at it. They may catch
something you didn't.
-
Make it look professional: Do not
use colored paper or backgrounds. If you are mailing printed copies,
have it printed on white bond paper.
